A collaboration between the Asser Institute and Movies that Matter

The Asser Institute and Movies that Matter have launched a structural partnership that connects international law and human rights with the power of film. Together, we aim to inform and engage The Hague’s international community through screenings and expert discussions.

This initiative combines Movies that Matter’s experience in promoting human rights through film with the Asser Institute’s legal research and expertise. Each event features a film screening followed by a panel discussion with legal and human rights experts.

The programme aligns with the Asser Institute’s research agenda, exploring themes such as:

  • State responsibility and accountability for international crimes

  • Technology, rights, and security

  • Global governance and legitimacy

Why it matters

  • For professionals: The discussions provide insight into current international legal challenges, relevant to practitioners at international courts, embassies, and legal organisations

  • For the public: The events offer an accessible way to understand key issues in justice and human rights through powerful storytelling.

  • For The Hague: This partnership highlights the city’s role as the International City of Peace and Justice and strengthens its cultural diplomacy efforts.

Through this collaboration, film and law come together to inspire dialogue, broaden understanding, and support a more just and informed society.
